The dealer's card that is shown face up to the player is called the UP CARD. The dealer's cards that remain
face down until the end of the round are called the HOLE CARDS. The BURN CARD is the card that is removed from the
top of the deck and discarded after the cards have been shuffled and cut.
After the cards are shuffled the dealer places them in the SHOE, a card holder that holds multiple decks of cards.
The Blackjack term for requesting another card from the dealer is HIT. If the player decides not to hit, and
declines another card, then the player has chosen to STAND.
When the first two cards dealt to the player are of the same value, the two cards are called a PAIR. When the
player receives a pair, they are given the option of SPLITTING PAIRS. This means that the player can split
their two cards into two separate hands and place an equal bet on each hand.
In the game of Blackjack the player also has the option of DOUBLING DOWN. This is a term for hitting only once
more and doubling the bet on their hand.
A hand is which the ace is counted as a one is called a HARD HAND. By counting the ace as a one in Blackjack,
the player leaves the possibility of a bust on a future hit. A SOFT HAND is a hand that counts the ace as an
eleven and allows the player to hit safely without the possibility of busting.
A strategy known as CARD COUNTING refers to the player's ability to keep track of all the cards played in order
to maximize their odds of winning.
If the value of your hand is over 21, then your hand is referred to as a BUST. If the dealer and player have the same
value in their hands, then the play is referred to as a PUSH. On the other hand, if the player wants to forfeit the
game after receiving their first two cards, they can SURRENDER, and forfeit only half of the original amount wagered.
